The Manager Challenge is a team competition: a web-based, investment strategy simulation.  It was created to provide an interactive way for investment professionals to test and sharpen their manager selection and monitoring skills in a competitive, yet fun environment.  The Manager Challenge reflects the Brandes Institute’s goal of delivering “education through engagement.” It provides a competitive environment in which participants can sharpen their skills in manager selection and monitoring – while learning valuable “real world” lessons.

2008 Manager Challenge Events

During 2008, we plan to present the Manager Challenge at a number of industry conferences and seminars. These competitions may include “in-person” events designed to be both educational and entertaining for participants. The Manager Challenge may also be offered as a “remote” competition for attendees in advance of a conference or seminar, with the prize award taking place at the actual event.  This “remote” Manager Challenge capability may also be offered separately from any specific conference, with competitors logging in from around the world.

If either an in-person or remote presentation of the Manager Challenge might fit with your conference or seminar objectives, please contact us at challengeinfo@brandes.com.

The 2008 Brandes Institute Manager Challenge Trophy will be awarded to the team that scores the highest excess return in any competition during the year.

The Brandes Institute Manager Challenge 2007 Tournament

The Brandes Institute Manager Challenge 2007 Tournament was played over three week-long qualifying events during the year.  The Tournament was open to clients of Brandes Investment Partners L.P., consultants, financial advisors, and institutional investors worldwide.

Each week-long event advanced by one period each day, allowing competitors 24 hours to research and allocate their portfolio accordingly. The team with the highest excess return in any single event was declared the champion.

The winner of the 2007 Tournament was Leah Jones from Chicago-based Mosaic Financial Group, LLC.  She earned an invitation to the Brandes Institutional Consultant Seminar at the Grand Del Mar Resort in San Diego, and was awarded the 2007 Tournament Trophy.

Brandes Institute Manager Challenge – Institutional Client Tournament 2006 (open only to institutional clients of Brandes Investment Partners, L.P.)

The Brandes Institute Manager Challenge – Institutional Client Tournament 2006 offered participants an opportunity to represent their organization in a worldwide competition open to teams affiliated with any institutional client of Brandes Investment Partners, L.P.

The 2006 Tournament was played over four qualifying rounds during the year.  The top 10 teams were prizewinners, and the top two qualified for the Championship round.

In the Championship round, the two highest-scoring teams from the qualifying rounds competed at the Brandes Institutional Client Conference at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa in Dana Point, on October 24th, 2006.  In the 2006 Tournament final the “Mad Cows” of Lockwood Advisors defeated the “Doji Bears” of IKANO Fund Management for the trophy.
